In all cases we cannot arrange a funeral until a cause of death certificate has been issued by the GP or Physician.

Can I be a member of the burial society as an individual?
No – the society only covers members of affiliated synagogues through their membership.

As you are a Reform organization can a non-Jewish spouse be buried next to their partner in the cemetery?
No – the cemetery we use is an orthodox cemetery.

As you are a Reform organization do you perform Taharah prior to a funeral?
Yes – our undertakers have staff who perform the ritual cleansing of a body for the Society in accordance with halacha.

Do we have to bury within 24 hours?
No – we will conduct a funeral within 24 – 48 hours or later if circumstances require this to be done.

What do we do if somebody dies at home at the weekend or evening?
Inform your GP who will come and certify death if he is able to but this is dependent on circumstances and then telephone our office to arrange a removal - if he is unavailable telephone the coroners office (via your local police station) who will arrange a removal to a local mortuary until the GP or surgery can arrange for a certificate to be issued.

What happens when somebody dies in hospital?
If a death occurs during the night or at the weekend a body will be taken to the hospital mortuary. In certain instances where mortuary facilities are not available the hospital will arrange for a body to be placed in a local mortuary. In both cases certification will be issued when the hospital offices are open.

Can we book a plot in the cemetery?
Yes – But this can only be arranged at the time of a death for the adjacent plot. We do not sell or pre-book plots as graves spaces are dug on a rotational basis.
